The serving size and number of servings in each beverage container is shown in the Nutrition Facts Panel on the product's label.
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) defines the standard serving size for all non-alcoholic beverages as 8 fluid ounces (8 fl oz). This reference amount, known as the RACC (Reference Amount Customarily Consumed), allows people to compare nutrition information for different types of beverages.
Although the beverage RACC remains 8 fl oz, there are some changes coming in the serving sizes you'll see on beverage containers.
PepsiCo and other beverage companies have announced a voluntarily program to display calorie labels on the front of our packages in support of First Lady Michelle Obama's anti-obeisty program. As part of this program, the White House and FDA directed the companies to show calories based on a 12 fl oz serving size on containers larger than 20 ounces, except for juice and juice beverages. For juice and juice beverages, they directed us to show calories based on a 8 fl oz serving. For consistency, these same serving sizes will be used for the calorie and nutrition information in the Nutrition Facts Panels on the back of our packages.
As PepsiCo and other companies transition to this new labeling guidance, you may see a mix of serving sizes on beverage packages. The chart below shows the serving size and number of servings for common beverage packages under the traditional labeling guidelines and the new guidelines being implemented with front-of-pack calorie labels.
